A Beautiful Day at the Baud

Around 300 people were on hand to see the Charleston Battery defeat the College of Charleston Cougars 2 - 0 at Blackbaud stadium on a fine Tuesday afternoon.  Goals from Stephen Armstrong and JC Mack in the second half gave the Battery the win.  Charleston controlled most the game and squandered three or four good scoring opportunities.  On the defensive side, the Cougars didn't register a decent shot on goal.
You can find the Charleston Battery recap at this link

There were liberal substitutions for both squads but more interesting to me were the absences of some of the trialist and the addition of a couple new faces.

Seemingly gone from the Battery camp are goalkeeper Pat Hannigan, midfielder Luke Mulholland (who is rumored to be going up to Wilmington), Jose Cuevas, Jerry Saintel, and Brazillian defender Guilherme Reis.

At this stage, its about building the "team,"  If you look at those players positions, they were defender and midfielders, something the Battery seems to have plenty of currently with the veterans from last season filling the back line and midfield.

There were two new faces as well.  The first, 17 year-old Nico Rittmeyer, who saw some time against Chicago in the Carolina Challenge Cup.  Out on the right wing, Rittmeyer didn't look out of place on the field at all.  In fact he made several great crosses, and was a terror to the CofC back line from the time he came on in the second half.  He is very young and from what we can find, he goes to Savannah County Day High School and is set to graduate in 2012.  He played for Bridge FA and is a member of the US Developmental Academy.

The second new face is Diego Walsh.  Walsh has an impressive resume of teams: MLS's Crew and KC, Miami FC, Adelaide United of the Australian A-league and most recently with Wellington Phoenix

Check out his wiki page as well.  The photos in the wiki article don't look much like him now but this sure looks like the guy that was out their today.

Zaher and Kelly both were wearing ice packs today (Zaher on his ankle and Kelly his thigh) but both were kicking the ball around an moving fine at the half.

Heading into the last two weeks of preseason, the Battery will now be working on conditioning on finishing.   The defense will only strengthen as Falvey gets back into the mix.

Mulholland is in Wilmington -- he scored a goal for the Hammerheads yesterday in their friendly versus Raleigh CASL Elite.

for the confirmation AH on Mulholland. I liked the way he looked and no doubt if we weren't flush of mids we would would have picked him up. should be a good player for the Hammerheads.
