Former Battery player Nigel Marples spent three season with the Battery, and was part of the squad that
won the USL Championship in 2010.  The Canadian now plays in the Danish First Divison for HB Koge.   No Quarter caught up with Nigel to see how thing were going for him and memories of Charleston.

No Quarter:  So tell us what you have been up to since leaving Charleston?

Nigel Marples:   "After finishing up with the Battery two summers ago, I went to Chicago and trained throughout the winter and spring with a team called Bridges FC. They are an amazing organization that offers a venue with terrific coaching for college and pro players to get better in the off season. However, they also take a team to Europe every summer during which they play a number of professional teams. The purpose of the trip is to try and find players professional contracts and also to give the players the experience of what it would be like to play at the pro level. Bridges has helped so many players to go from amateur to pro, hence the name "Bridges" - bridge to the pros. So I came to Europe with them last summer and was asked to stay and tryout with HB Køge after we played against them. The timing was in my favour as Køge had just sold a defender and a few weeks later they offered me a contract! I accepted gladly!"

NQ:  How does the do the USL and Danish 1st Division differ in terms of play?

NM:  The play here is a little different. Players here have grown up spending a lot more time on the ball than I did growing up. The system may be different now in the US with youth teams training a lot more. But from my perspective the Danish first division is more technical than the USL. And the USL a bit more athletically based than the Danish leagues. I also feel the players here make decisions a touch quicker and also anticipate more accurately due to the amount of time spent training growing up. 

NQ:  What is you favorite thing about living in Denmark?

NM:  My favourite thing about living here is definitely the food! The produce and meats are so fresh and not loaded with artificial enhancers. Best of all are the bakeries though. The bread and the pastries oh boy!! Soooo GOOOOD.

NQ:  What do you miss most in Denmark?

NM:  I of course miss being around my friends and family from Canada the most. It is tough at times living in a different country and culture on my own.

NQ: What do you miss about Charleston?

NM:  Man, I miss a lot of things about Charleston - the sunshine, the amazing beaches, the great restaurants - ha I must really enjoy eating, I have a few great friends I really miss there, but above all I miss my teammate Zach Prince's dog, George! 

NQ:  So what is next for you?

NM:  Well, I believe that anything is possible and you have to live each day expecting to be surprised. That being said, my contract with Køge is up this summer and that's all I have planned at this point. I could be anywhere on this wonderful world after that!... a visit to Charleston is certainly not out of the question! 

NQ:  Anything else you would like to add?

NM: I'm sending my best wishes to the Battery and the Regiment for another successful season! I look forward to keeping tabs on the results online.  I hope you enjoy another great season in one of the most beautiful places I've had the pleasure of living in!!

10 years of the Carolina Challenge Cup

The 2013 Carolina Challenge Cup enters its 10th year when it begins on February 16.  And a great ten years it has been!  Over the years, the Battery have hosted seven different MLS teams, Freddy Adu scored his first professional goal at during the Cup back in 2004 and we've seen some great players on the pitch at the 'Buad.  Remarkably, in seven out of the past ten years of the tournament, the winner of the Carolina Challenge Cup has gone on to win either the MLS Cup or MLS Supporter's Shield.

Even though the USL season typically doesn't start until April, for Battery fans the Carolina Challenge Cup marks the unofficial start of the season.  It is a great chance to catch up with everyone you may not have seen in the off season and watch some great live soccer.  The grill will get fired up and a few drinks will be drunk.

Although the Battery has never won the tournament, it has finished second in both 2006 and 2011.  Not too surprising considering the boys have typically only been together for a week or so before the tournament.  This year probably won't change that statistic as the CCC will include tough competition;  the Chicago Fire, first timers Vancouver Whitecaps, and last years runner up of the MLS Cup, the Houston Dynamo.  

The MLS clubs all start their preseason training next week giving them nearly five weeks to prepare.  Houston have three players that were called up for the US Men's national team camp for the match later in January against Canada; goalkeeper Tally Hall, midfielder Brad Davis, and forward Will Bruin.

The Chicago Fire have recently added Estonian international midfielder, Joel Limpere.  The Fire's goalkeeper, Sean Johnson was also called into the US Men's January camp by US coach Klinsmen.

The Vancouver Whitecaps stars US international Jay Demerit, subject of the fabulous documentary, "Rise and Shine, The Jay Demerit Story."  If you can, find a copy and watch this great story.  It is currently on instant stream on Netflix.  Here is the trailer for the documentary.

For the Battery, there are still quite a few unknowns and hopefully we will start seeing the roster take shape shortly.  As expected, turnover is high, especially on a championship team at this level.  The win, attracts attention from everywhere.  Rumors floating around that Nicki Paterson has a January trial with New York, Jose Cuevas a trial in San Jose, Ryan Richter with one in Philadelphia.  Tyler Mueller was training with the Seattle Sounders at the end of the 2012 season.  Kyle Hoffer was offered a lucrative contract in expansion side, Tampa Bay Flames.

Colin Falvey should return as the captain of Battery and John Wilson hasn't ruled out returning in 2013.   Coach Anhaueser and club president Andrew Bell recently made a scouting trip to Jamaica and will have a second player trial here in Charleston this weekend.

Regardless the result of the tournament, the Lowcountry soccer fans will sure to see some great live matches.    Get your tickets early and look for information on the Regiment's Facebook page about tailgates and other events during the week.

2012, A Year in Review

As 2013 is set to begin, we thought we would look back on 2012 and a put together a list of some of the more memorable moments from the Battery's 20th season!

Best Goal:  Nicki Paterson's volley from 20 yards out against the Orlando City Lions  Head over to the www.USLnation.com archive section and find the June 9 match vs. Orlando, skip to the 40 minute of the video and just watch and be amazed.

Best Save:  Got to be the stop Andrew Dykstra made during penalty kicks against Rochester in the playoff match. Which one you ask?  All of them.

Best Win: The away win playoff match against Rochester.  A dramatic last minute goal by Tony Donatelli to send the game into extra time only to be followed by a dramatic penalty shoot out.  The match was best summed up by the folks over at "The Beautiful Game":

In the world of sports, good games are usually remembered for a few days but often forgotten when the next match rolls around.  Great games sometimes become the high point of the season with maybe a play or two finding a place in our mental highlight reels.  Then, in an entirely separate category, are the monumental contests in which legends are born, showcasing such passion and persistence, where seconds of brilliance become defining moments, to be remembered forever from the smallest fan to the seasoned executive.

Still some of my favorite words written about the game of soccer and the fact that they are about he Charleston Battery make them even sweeter!

Best Tailgate:  Championship Game Day where the spread was amazing!   From the curry's to the sides to the beverages.  We must of had close to 150 to 200 people come through.  A special shout out to the Port City Firm for joining us, we might support different clubs but we're all supporters of the beautiful game.

Best Roadtrip:  The Annual Regiment bus trip is always a great time and this year was no different.  About 35 faithful soles boarded the bus for Wilmington to watch the Battery take on the Hammerheads.  The Port City Firm were gracious hosts and fed us well and kept us lubricated before the match.  Sadly, the Battery lost 2-1 but luckily their were a few beers left in the cooler for the ride home!

Best Off-Pitch Story:   Well some things are best unmentioned in public!  Perhaps if you buy me a drink or two I'll share the story with you!

MLS and USL Pro Affiliation?

Rumors have been floating around for a couple months about some sort of agreement being worked on between MLS and USL Pro but with the USL Annual General Meeting wrapping up, there seems to be some vague details starting to surface. Affiliation


What do we know?  Well nothing for certain but Jason Davis at North American Soccer Network is reports this

 "USL informed its member clubs of a proposed agreement with MLS that would provide for an integrated third Division/MLS reserve league.  We could see some interplay between USL Pro and MLS reserves teams in 2013 and full integration in 2014.

The details as understood are:

If an MLS city has a USL Pro team nearby, MLS will provide 5 players and pay their salary

If there is no USL Pro team, the MLS reserve team will be come a new, permanent team in USL Pro

All USL Pro teams will have an MLS affiliate. "

Reading the details leave a lot of questions unanswered.  What is "nearby"? 50 miles?  100 miles?  What does the"affiliation" entail?  Does it mean we get a couple players every now and then?  Who would be the Battery affiliated club?  Is it similar to the ECHL South Carolina Stingray's affiliation with the NHL Boston Bruins?

Loans can be double edge swords as we saw last year.  Dykstra was typically on a game to game loan with the Battery.  He wasn't allowed to play in US Open Cup matches as DC United didn't want him cup tied.  Our Jamaican's Boyd and Kelly had to return to their parent club in Jamaica just as the play off started. But if we can get a couple players it would definitely add to the depth of the squad.

Having MLS reserve or "B" teams playing in USL Pro isn't as strange as it sounds on the surface.  Spanish and German teams have a "second" team playing in the lower divisions.  Obviously if all MLS teams enter a USL Pro team it would increase the league by 19 teams and allow regional divisions as USL envisions.  

The affiliation detail is the one that peaks the most interest.  Does this mean a friendly?  Exchange of coaching ideas?  Branding?  Short term loans?  Opportunities for USL players to train with MLS teams after (or even before) the USL season? 

As you can see it will be interesting to see what info we can find out and even if this will become a reality.

One thing is for sure, the Battery has a proud past.  They have also been very prudent on the business side of   game.  I imagine that they will only contnue this trend and we will still have the same proud and competative Charleston Battery we have come to love over the years.

Battery Take Down Pittsburgh

Nicki Paterson scored a nice header from a Jose Cuevas set piece in the ninth minute and held the lead to win the match in front of 3269 at Blackbaud Stadium over the visiting Pittsburgh Riverhounds last night.

The Battery then went on to outshot the Riverhounds 13-6 continuing Coach Anhaueser's promise of attacking soccer, while the defense, lead by Colin Falvey, successfully keep a clean sheet for the second week in a row.

The Backline anchored by Falvey and Kyle Hoeffer with John Wilson and Taylor Mueller on the outside and the continuing onloan keeper from DC United, Andrew Dykstra did a solid job of limiting Pittsburgh's chance, with Dykstra making a couple key saves at the end of the match.

Sanyang is doing a great job in teh defensive midfield role but had to be subbed out at the half due to a "lower abdomen injury"  Sanyang appeared to take an elbow late in the first half and was relpaced by new signing, Navion Boyd.

Boyd, who has 17 caps for the Jamaican National Team lined up on the outside and is fast to be sure.  He seemed to make some poor decisions on his final touch but we'll give him a little time to adjust to the squad.

Cuevas also when out in the 64th minute with an ankle sprain.  Depending on the seriousness and the grade of the sprain his recovery time could be anywhere from one week to three months.  Hopefully it isn't serious as Cuevas play has been key to the Battery success so far this season.

Dane Kelly also returned this week to the Battery and came on with 12 minutes remaining in the match but didn't do much during his time on the pitch.

The Battery are now 3-0-1 on the season and currently tied for first with Orlando City FC in USL Pro.  Next up for the Battery is Antigua Barracuda FC on another Friday night match at Blackbaud Stadium.

History Repeats itself: Battery 2, Richmond 1

Just like 20 years ago when these two teams first played each other, the Charleston Battery came out on top over the Richmond Kickers by a score of 2-1.

As some of you readers may know, after 12 years of wanting to go to Richmond to see the Battery play at City Stadium, I finally got my chance.

Some of you may remember the "wars" online on the now less used forum, www.usldiscussions.com  between fans of both sides.  I had met a couple of the main posters, Mikeyratt, PattieA but the one I wanted to met the most, the one who always seemed to be able to write well though out discussions that seemed to get under your skin but at the same time true, was Big Dave.  In real life Big Dave is a great guy with some serious drumming skills.  We were lucky to be able to hang out after the match at Richmond's post match pub, Gus's on Broad Street and reminisced about the matches over the years and talk soccer for while.

Had a great time and already look forward to returning one day.  Just hope it won't take another 12 years to get back!

As to the game,  the Battery's through back jerseys look fabulous!  It was also good to see Dusty Huddock on the bench in his role as goal keeper coach.

The Battery lined up in what I would call a a 4-4-1-1 with Bundu doing a good job up top, playing with his back to goal, holding up balls and winning the first ball in.  behind him was teh ever impressive Jose Cuevas, he seems to have free reign in the top, picking up the second ball from Bundu and crashing the box during crosses.

The midfield began with Ryan Richter and Zack Prince on the wings withe Nicki Paterson and Amodou Sanyang in the middle.  There was some promise and good runs down the wings but Richmond made things difficult for them.

In the back, Colin Falvey and Kyle Hoffer had stellar matches.  Hoffer is a beast in the air and seemed to win every ball. Johnny Wilson was an ever tireless engine up and down the wing all match long and Mark Wiltse performed good as well.

In goal, Kevin Klaslia made some fantastic saves and seems to gain confidence and skill since his inauspicious start against DC United in the Carolina Challenge Cup.  There wasn't anything he could do about the Kicker goal and

Both of Cuevas' goals were great team efforts but Cuevas seems to have a knack for being at the right place at the right time.  It is never easy to score on Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascale but he did it twice.  check out the video of all the goals at the link below

Battery Win Season Opener, 2-1 In Richmond

Overall I felt the boys did very well.  Sure there are things to improve on but that is to be expected early in the season.

Now on to the home opener against Richmond on Saturday at 7:30.  If the first match up was any indication, it will be a great game!

2012 Season kicks off tomorrow

The Charleston Battery's 20 season begins Saturday with an away match with long time rivals, the Richmond Kickers.  I will be lucky enough to make my first trip up to Richmond and am excited to see the boys back in action after a long off season.

As usual in the USL, the off-season saw many changes to the Battery roster.  Fortunately it looks like some fan favorites will be returning

Rejoining the Battery from the 2011 season is Nicki Paterson, Colin Falvey, Zach Prince, Sean Flatley, Mark Wiltse, JC Mack and Johnny Wilson.  Also rumored to be re joining the squad is Jamaican forward, Dane Kelly.

Coming in with strong resumes from MLS and USL teams are Tony Donatelli, Ryan Richter, Sallieu Bundu, Amadou Sanyang, and Kyle Hoffer.  There experience should more than help solidify a strong returning core.

Appearing as rookies in the USL are some young prospects,  Jose Cuevas and Charlie Romero have impressed with goals throughout the preseason.  Cody Ellison and Tyler Mueller will learn much in defense from the experience of Falvey and Wilson.

Between the pipes is Alex Kann and Kevin Klasila.  While young, they should benefit from the Battery bringing in former Battery legend, Dusty Huddock as goal keeper coach.

There are also rumors of two more Jamaicans joining the team. Forward with Tivoli Gardens and Jamaican international with 17 caps, Navion Boyd is one.  The other is teammates with Dane Kelly at Village United and has two caps for Jamaica, midfielder Dino Williams.

There has also been some rumbling about a couple former Battery players that might train with the Battery this season so the possibly of an match appearance is good.  We'll let the Battery or the players themselves release those names though.

It will be interesting to see how the Battery lines up tomorrow with Richmond.  But expect both teams looking to make statements early in the season.

Battery add Pair of Keepers

Alec Kann and Kevin Klasila were announced by the Charleston Battery as the clubs latest signings.

Kann a four year starter at Clint Dempsey's alma mata Furman University, stands at 6' 4".

Klasila from Santa Clara University has a great personality.  He made a point of speaking with many of the fan that were at the Battery meet and greet just prior to the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Kann has been getting the starts and most time during the few preseason matches we have witnessed.  Klasila had an inauspicious start with the Battery after giving up a soft goal during the Carolina Challenge Cup when a powerful shot from then DC United now Battery trialist Ryan Richter went through his hands.  other than that he has looked solid.

Battery Sign Forward Salieu Bundu

The Charleston Battery announced they have signed forward Salieu Bundu.  Bundu spent the 2011 season on loan with the Charlotte Eagles from the Carolina Railhawks.

Bundu fled his homeland of Sierre Leone to Guinea on foot when he was 15 after his father had been murdered by rebels. His brother won a lottery for a green card for the US shortly after which allowed him to settle in America.

Bundu started his career in 2008 with the Cleveland City Stars and then joined the Carolina Railhawks in 2009 where he stayed until his loan to the Eagles in 2011.

Bundu has been on trial since the Carolina Challenge Cup where he made an impact for the Battery by drawing the foul that set up the 89th minute penalty that was converted, giving the Battery a 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew.

The Battery take on Coastal Carolina away tonight but are back at the 'Baud Saturday where they take on the Wilmington Hammerheads.

Battery Win Pair of Preseason Matches

The Charleston Battery defeated the College of Charleston and Clemson University in a pair of preseason matches yesterday at Blackbaud Stadium.

In the first match of the day, Charleston took on the College of Chalreston and won from a goal from Battery trialist Matt Kassel.

The Battery started mostly signed players in the first match. The Battery controlled large portions of the game with the College of Charleston mostly trying to score from quick counter attacks that rarely bothered the Battery keeper.

Rumored to be coming to Charleston, former Seattle Sounder player, Amadou Sanyang did indeed appear and played the entire match.  He looked to fit in well in the defensive midfield role.

In the second Charleston match of the day, the Battery beat Clemson University 2-0.  Goals from Charlie Romero and Moses Aduny gave the Battery the win.   The Battery played this match with mostly unsigned players with exception on Sean Flatley, JC Mack and Zack Prince who played right back.  One player that really stood out was Ryan Richter who most recently was on a two month trial with DC United and scored for United against Charleston in the Carolina Challenge Cup.  He did well controlling the right side of midfield for the Battery making several nice runs and delivering some nice crosses.

Bookending the two Battery matches,  the College of Charleston defeated Clemson University 1-0.

Next up for the Battery is a preseaon match against Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday Mach 24.  Time of kickoff is currently set for 4pm at Blackbaud stadium .

Where are they now: Cole Peverley

New Zealand International and Battery midfielder Cole Peverley is now playing with Canterbury United.

Peverley is expecting to return to the Battery for the 2012 season.

Cantebury United play in New Zealand's ASB Premeir League.

Where are they Now? Brandon Massie

A recent article on the Potomac Soccer Wire Battery player Brandon Massie will be playing with newly fromed Norfolk SharX in the USL indoor league (MISL)

Brandon originally hails from the area and he was excited about being close to home.

"I was excited to learn that Norfolk might have a team and I knew I wanted to come home and give it a shot. Now that I've made it, I'm so happy to be a part of this community again. I am also happy that my parents will be able to see me play again. I've been playing in Charleston for two seasons and with them at the games in Norfolk it will be just like old times!"

Where are they now: JC Mack

The Return of the Mack.

Last season, JC Mack was sidelined after showing promise down the wings for the Battery.  His recovery has been slow but Mack is a fighter and has been working hard to be ready to be back on the pitch when the season starts up in 2012. 

Here is a video he put together and in case you didn't know, JC is a bit of musician as well.  I'm pretty sure he wrote the rap and put together the samples for his latest video.

So your coming to the Colonies ( Or Some tips for our friends visting from across the pond)

Portsmouth have some great fans to be sure.  For all they have gone through over the last couple years you can't help have a soft spot for someone who has stood beside their club.  And while they have one of soccer's most recognizable and (in?)famous fans in John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood, there are scores of others that are  equally as passionate about the club.

On July 17, Portsmouth FC will take on our local boys, the Charleston Battery.  Portsmouth will also spend the majority of their time training here in the States based in Charleston.  So for those supporters making the trip over, here are some tips and suggestions while you are staying in the Charleston area.

1.  Its hot and humid.
You likely will get of the plane and think you've walked into a steam bath.  Most visitors are going to want to take advantage of all the sites and scenery Charleston has to offer but pace yourself.  Drink plenty of water and try to do things early in the morning or late afternoon.  Take lots of breaks.  Charleston is a laid back type of place so popping into a bar or pub while downtown in the middle of the afternoon is totally acceptable.

Make sure you wear sunscreen or a hat, getting sunburned the first day can make things pretty miserable for a couple days. 


2. Things to see
There is a lot to do and see.  Of course, everyone has their own likes and dislikes, so here is a link to the local visitor center be sure to check out the video gallery (25 different videos) and links to most things in the area.

For me here is the top places to visit and things to do while in town in no particular order:
Carriage ride -good way to start the visit as it gives you a some history of the city plus you can get a good layout of downtown and go back to visit some of the places along the tour if you wish
Market Street- four blocks of local vendors selling everything from paintings to jewelry to Charleston's famous sweet grass baskets. 
The Aquarium - not the biggest or best in the States but it is nice and a good way to get out of the heat for the afternoon
The Beach- lounging around on holiday is always a top priority.  Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island are all within about 15 min of downtown.   If you want to try your hand at some local fishing, you can get a single day license and rent all the kit at the pier on Folly Beach.
Take a walk- You really will appreciate Charleston by walking.  You can wander the streets looking at the houses and gardens and our famous wrought iron fences, gates and ornaments or you can check out one of the many walking tours including Ghost walks, Pirate walks, Garden walks and a few others.
Get on the water-whether you take a harbor tour or rent a kayak on Shem creek.  One of my favorites is the sunset sails on the Schooner Pride 
Fort Sumter- for history buffs, its where the American Civil War began.
USS Yorktown- an American aircraft carrier with a lot of static displays of aircraft,
Check out a plantation  Boone Hall, Drayton hall, Magnolia or Middleton Place are all nice.  Boone Hall feature the quintessential oak lined avenue leading to the front of the house.

Some other cool things;  Charleston Museum, Firefly Distillery (sweet tea vodka), Charleston Tea Plantation, Morris Island lighthouse, Waterfront Park, Ft. Moultrie (fort that was attacked in the movie "Glory" by the all black unit the 54th Massachusetts during the Civil War), and Charles Towne landing.  


3.  Eat
Charleston is a great place for food.  Everything from upscale to down home.  Seafood, fresh vegetables, pork.  There are some dishes which you have to try; Shrimp and Grits, pulled pork with a mustard based BBQ, boiled peanuts, steam local oysters, Fried Green tomatoes and any local seafood.  Generally, servings are big and prices are reasonable.  Feel free to ask for recommendation based on what you want and how much you want to spend in the comments area and I'm sure we can help you out.


4.  Bars and nightlife
There are several places downtown that are pretty good,  The Gryffin and Liberty Tavern for more traditional pub feel.  Big john's Tavern for those that want to experience a true American dive bar.  For those wanting to let there hair down, Market Street Saloon (think of the movie Coyote Ugly were the girls occasionally dance on the bar)  Outside of downtown,  our local bar that shows footie if its on television is the Madra Rua (owned by a Liverpool supporter but we all get along (normally) when we watch matches) ,  very quaint and a place the locals go. Not really in the nicest part of town but definitely worth stopping by for a match and a couple pints.  Again, let us know what type place your looking for and we'll direct you in the right direction.

5.  Shopping  I'm sure someone will want to go shopping,  There are four retail shopping malls in the area,  Northwoods and Citadel malls are traditional shopping malls,  couple big department stores, with tons of smaller stores.  There is an Outlet mall where most major stores sell last years lines or overages usually for a pretty good discount.   there is also a big outdoor style mall in Mt. Pleasant area.  Another good place for shopping is King Street downtown (near the Market).  Many of the high-end shops have stores their but there are quite a few locally owned shops that are pretty reasonable as well.




Charleston is a great city, and different from most American cities.  There is a sense of community pride normally found in small towns.  People are mostly friendly and it is easy to strike up a conversation. 

Battery out of US Open Cup

The  Battery lost to Orlando City FC Tuesday night 1-0.

It was a historic win by Orlando City, as they became the first non-MLS team to win at Blackbaud Stadium in US Open Cup play. The Battery have been playing Open Cup games in that stadium since 1999 and rarely lose. They are 18-5-3 (2-1 in PKs) in that stadium all-time in this tournament and will fail to reach the Third Round for the first time since 2005.

US Open Cup; Battery take on Regals FC

Tuesday night starts the US Open Cup for 2011 where the Charleston Battery take on Regal F.C., an amateur team out of Houston, Texas.    One of the oldest cup competitions in the world, it doesn't garner the attention it deserves from main stream media, but the potential for upsets and the underdog winning will keep most soccer fans interested.

Charleston has always taken the US Open Cup seriously, advancing to the finals in 2008 against DC United.  A equally fought match that with some controversial calls during the match that the Battery loss 2-1.   The Battery has been successful making it to the later stages of the knock out cup for many years.

This years first round opponent, Regal F.C. is a very organized amateur club out of Houston, Texas.  looking at their roster they seem to have a lot of Mexican and Central American players on the team.  We have been told that they have a hard work ethic and play and attractive style of soccer and they are excited to be playing in the fine facility the Battery have and against a professionally run club in a quality stadium..  With nothing to lose, we expect them to come out hard as making it to this point in the USOC is a big accomplishment for the team.

Charleston has been idle since the last minute 1-0 defeat in Harrisburg nearly 10 days ago.  The boys have had a few day of rest and recuperation but have been training hard.  A few of them said last week they didn't know exactly what to expect of Regal FC but that they take the US Open Cup serious and they want to win.

But who will take the field on Tuesday night?  On one hand,  time between competitive games gives the squad time to heal but it can also cause a squad to loss its edge and become "rusty".  This match could allow Auggie to stretch the legs of the starters and have them ready to go for Friday nights match up against Dayton.

On the other hand, on paper the Battery should win this even if they don't play there starters.  Most of the fringe players will be looking to impress and should put out a hard working performance trying to impress the Coach Anhaueser.

We at No Quarter believe we'll see something in the middle, a mix of starters and fringe players in the opening 45 minutes, followed by a few subs of fringe for starters and depending on score line, some of the starters to come off for a few other players.

As far as injuries, barring any mishaps at practice, Dugoni and Peverly are the only two that wont be available for the match.

The Baud will only be open  on the West side as typical for early round USOC matches, so E10 will be in W10 for the match.  Tickets are only $5 and season ticket holders get complementary tickets to this match which can be picked up at will call on game day or the office Monday or Tuesday.

Richmond v. Charleston 5-24 (R)

Been busy outside of soccer and really don't have time for a in depth preview of the match before Tuesday nights match up between the Charleston Battery and Richmond Kickers (Blackbaud Stadium, 7:30pm EST, watch live and free and www.USLlive.com ) but here are a few bullet points worth mentioning.

• Five matches without a goal -  Battery have got to turn it around quick!  With nine games done and dusted, a third of the season is over.
• Injures and suspensions - Dykstra, Dugoni, Kelly, Zaher, and Coleman didn't make the trip to Wilmington.  Peverley might be out, heard two other players had to be looked at after the match in Wilmington as well.  Not sure who is going to be healthy to take the field Tuesday night.
• Wilson suspension - Johnny got a straight red on Saturday.  He'll miss the match against Richmond as well.

On the Positive note

• Two for Tuesday!  Two tickets for $10 and $2 drafts all night long.  
• Diego Walsh had a pretty good match and will be able to help cover.

Richmond are still riding high and are still undefeated after 7 matches with 19 points.  The Battery are fifth in the division with 11 points.

No official Regiment tailgate for this one but I'm sure their will be a few at the usual spot with a pre-match beverage or two before heading into the stadium.

New faces, New Jersey and Old Friends

The Charleston Battery held their "Meet and Greet" with the Battery players and trialist tonight at the Three Lions pub at Blackbaud Stadium.  We arrived about thrirty minutes early and was surprised to see the team out on the pitch playing a match against Georgia Southern University (Battery won 2-0) but they were finishing up and headed to the showers so there wasnt time to really analysis anything. 

Up in the pub, season ticket holders were given a free drink and a nice selection of hor d'erves to start the night out.  After the team had showered, they were introduced by Battery president, Andrew Bell and Head Coach Mike Anhaueser.

Auggie first introduced the returning players.  Stephen Armstrong has taken up the roal of player/assistant coach and will be formally announced once his visa has cleared.  Jon Gruenwald was present and recovering from his hernia operation and  looks to return in about four weeks for him.  Also there was Mike Zaher who had been on trial in Finland.  Things didn't work out for Zaher there but he is happy about coming back to Charleston. Also present were Brandon Maisse, Zach Prince, Keith Wiggins, and Kevin Jackson

Still not present were Cole peverly and Nikki Patterson who were both waiting on visas but may feature as soon as middle of the Carolina Challenge Cup.  Colin Falvey who was still in New Zealand and Levi Coleman who is playing indoor.  No mention of Alioune Gueye tonight.

The trialist were then introduced and we didn't get all the names but some of the highlights were USL combine standout Luke Mullholand, College of Chalreston alumni Sean Bateau, Sean Flatley, and Kareem Yearwood .  A lively looking attacking midfielder Jose Cuevas as well as  Alex Casskey, Mark Wiltse from the University of South Carolina, and Geroge Davis, who did well during the combine. 

On the Goalkeeper side, former Chicago Fire keeper, Andrew Dykstra is in camp.  There were a few more names I missed but overall it looks like a good group of players and they all seemed excited about playing.

 The last announcement came as Auggie unveiled the new-look Battery jersey.  He set it up slowly announcing they had finalized the paperwork today on the player that will be the first one to wear the new Battery Jersey, and that he could think of no player better than to wear it. Then out steps number 25, Johnny Wilson who unzips his jacket to reveil the new top to a roaring applause.

Johnny then said a few words about feeling he still can contribute to the Battery and was excited to be coming back.  After a few obvious Brett Favre jokes he thanked everyone for their support.  A player like Wilson brings so much more than just his talent to a young team.  As a respected veteran, he can mentor a young player immensly and will can only help a team.

As the Battery faithful left the pub, Toronto FC were out on the main pitch for a light training session.  Saturday just can't come soon enough!

This season, you can become a Regiment member for as little as $20. That's right we dropped the price by $10 bucks this year.   The regular membership package includes a Charleston Battery scarf, 10% discount at the Battery Pro Shop, discounts on away bus trips, tailgates, as well as the invite to the players picnic.  The scarf and discount at the proshop (need a new jersey or t-shirt?) will more than pay for the membership cost and you're helping a good cause. 

Already have a scarf?  The Regiment offers a $40 premium kit that includes a Regiment logo polo shirt in your choice of black, red or yellow, as well as the 10% discount in the proshop, away bus trips, tailgates and the invite to the players picnic. 

The Regiment has a table at each home match under the West Stands in Blackbuad Stadium.  Come by and talk to one of the board members before the match or during half time.  Or find "The Regiment" on Facebook.  The Regiment does a majority of its communication about tailgates and other event there.

During the games you can find a majority of the Regiment members in section E10, waving flags, singing (or attempting to!) songs and cheering out boys onto victory!  Do you have to stand in E10 if you join the Regiment?  No, the Regiment want passionate fans throughout the 'Baud.  So if find it hard to give up those midfield seats or enjoy the company around you, that is fine.  You will still have the benefit of knowing you are helping support your local club.

Still not sure?  Come by one of the Regiment meetings.  The Regiment is now meeting at the newly opened Madra Rua Pub in Summerville.  They meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm.  Come by for a beer, see what it is all about and have a good time.

Piecing together the Battery preseason schedule

Yesterday, The Regiment hosted Battery President Andrew Bell and Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser at the monthly Regiment meeting.  Most of what was said was off the record but it was said that they are nearly ready to release their preseason schedule for matches other than the Carolina Challenge Cup.  The Battery are waiting on one team to confirm the date and will release the entire schedule at once. 

But news starting to spring up in press releases from two local colleges that they are playing the Battery.

Clemson has a good program over the years, producing several notable players including Johnny Wilson, Ian Fuller and US Men's National team players Oguchi "Gooch" Onyewu and Steward Holden.  This will be a good test for the Battery.

Ralph Lundy will play his boys against the Battery down at Patriots Point.  The College of Charleston's home field is a nice little stadium and the 3:00pm kick-off should make for a nice afternoon contest.
